Getting the most out of a personal shopper

What does this term ‘personal shopper’ mean to you? For some it might imply a service that is seen as only available to celebrities and wealthy people.  However, you may have noticed more and more shops are offering ‘Personal shopping’ or a free session with a ‘Personal stylist’. There’s often the lure of free Prosecco and there being no charge for the service.
You might then start to wonder why a store would give away so much. The answer is simple – they want to sell more clothes and accessories.
Now I have to be careful here but most of the time they have no or very little training in terms of advising what will suit you best.  This is probably why most women I know, who have used them, have ended up returning most or all of the items they bought. This is because their advice isn’t based on sound knowledge and analysis of what works for you. It’s why I will never do in-depth shopping for an individual unless they have had analysis done,  as it would be subjective/based on a very quick look! I want my clients to end up with items that are just right for them and understand why – it’s the only way to get a longer term benefit!
However, personal shoppers in stores can be helpful.
When a personal shopper can be helpful

  1. If you are very clear what suits you and just want some help to find a very specific item e.g. a wrap dress in navy or charcoal grey, a short, bright red shaped jacket. You are clear what works because you either have great intuition in this area or you’ve worked with an image consultant to analyse what works for you.
  2. If you want to understand the latest trends and build an outfit that’s really in fashion.

If you are in either of these scenarios, they will certainly be able to help. However, if you are looking to understand exactly what flatters you best for clothes and accessories including colour, shape, length, patterns and neckline, as well as how to put an outfit together well taking all of this into account, then you need to see an image consultant.
It will require an upfront investment but I promise you, you will:

  • Feel more confident in yourself and your choices.
  • Look good.
  • Save time putting outfits together.
  • Save time and money shopping.
  • Importantly, you will understand what suits you and why for long-term benefit.

You’re likely to end up with fewer items than before (although with more outfit possibilities!), avoid having lots of items that only go with black trousers/skirt and perhaps most importantly reduce how much you return or if you are someone who doesn’t bother, avoid having a load of items in your wardrobe still with their labels on!
Rest assured, when done well image analysis sessions should be fun, informative and most of all about you. They are never about the image consultant forcing you to wear things you hate, making you throw things out that you really don’t want to or making you look like him or her. It’s about some challenge but not ignoring who you are!
Once you know what suits you from an image expert, in store personal shoppers can be great at finding you just what you need.
Happy shopping!
