Love your wardrobe & boost your confidence

How many times do you open your wardrobe and feel you have nothing to wear? Or, you put something on but somehow it doesn’t feel right? This is despite every drawer and cupboard being crammed with clothing items.

Typically, women wear just 20% of the items in their wardrobe, yes just 20%! So it’s certainly not that most women lack clothing, it’s just that very few items are deemed ‘wearable’. There are 4 main reasons for this:

  1. There are items you go to wear but somehow they just don’t feel right (this includes brand new items which you have never worn)
  2. When you don’t wear something you forget you have it, especially if you have loads of items
  3. You oscillate between sizes so half your wardrobe at any one time is either too big or too small
  4. You have items you love but they don’t seem to go with anything else

I really want you to love your wardrobe and never get bored of your clothes and accessories because you enjoy wearing every single item and there are constantly opportunities for mixing and matching in different ways.

Now I am not saying you will never want to buy new things…of course you will. However, part of the excitement of the new is seeing what you can wear it with that you have already!

Let’s re-visit the 4 reasons and look at how to solve them:

  1. There are items you go to wear but somehow they just don’t feel right (this includes brand new items which you have never worn)

The reason for this is that in some way or another (potentially several!) some items just aren’t right for you – whether it be the colour tone, the shape, the pattern, the length, the neckline…What that means is that they don’t flatter your natural features.  If you have angular facial features, round necklines will not be the most flattering, for example!

It’s so important to understand the criteria for an item that really flatters you and helps you look and feel amazing.  You really can have a selection of ‘recipes’ for outfits that work for you, without just wearing the same thing all the time! Once you know what works for you, you will save time and money shopping and putting together outfits as well as feel great in everything you wear.

  1. When you don’t wear something, you forget you have it, especially if you have loads of items

Regular wardrobe sorts are essential to remind yourself what is in there and to get rid of anything that you just don’t wear any more, or that is looking tired. A couple of tips are to have a ‘one in, one out’ policy when you buy new items. Another idea is to put anything you are unsure about getting rid of in a bag, out of sight for 2 months. If you haven’t looked for it at the end of that time, to the charity shop it goes.

  1. You oscillate between sizes so half your wardrobe at any one time is either too big or too small

Decide on which size is most realistic for you and your life and get rid of the items in the other one. This is particularly good if you have lost weight. Keeping larger clothes permits you to put the weight back on…I have done this myself…out went my larger clothes when I lost 2 stone. The items I really wanted to keep, I had altered by a tailor.

  1. You have items you love but they don’t seem to go with anything else

If you are certain they flatter you then make it your mission to look for items to wear them with. Decide on the type of item(s) you need and then the specifics. If possible, try to buy items so each piece has a role to play in a couple of outfits, at the very least. The objective is to get to a wardrobe where you have fewer items but lots of outfit options for different occasions!

Hopefully this gives you food for thought on feeling excited about your wardrobe again. Once you know what flatters you and you have sorted your wardrobe out, it is much easier to shop to fill gaps with items you’ll feel great in which go with lots of other items you own. Knowing what works for you is the start of feeling excited about opening your wardrobe again and having something lovely to wear for every occasion. Love your wardrobe!
